“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.”
-Joseph Chilton Pearce

Here at Front YogaLoft, PLAY is the name of our game and our AcroYoga program is the leader of the play-pack. Never tried Acro? Nervous about what to expect? Read on, friend! We’ve got all the deets.

Our program has been in full effect for almost a year and it only continues to grow! Joseph Cancilla is the fearless leader of this class and when you come (you’re coming, right?) he and the rest of the gang will welcome you with open arms, hands and feet! Joseph has been practicing AcroYoga for 5 years and teaching for a year and a half. He will help guide you and all your new friends through a practice that is challenging, safe and playful.

FOR THE HISTORY BUFFS

AcroYoga dates back officially to who knows when. Folks have been playing around with something like Acro since time immemorial; where there are kids (or adults who play like kids) there is something-like-Acro. For our purposes, the stamp of officialness began with AcroYoga International, founded by Jason Nemer and Jenny Sauer-Klein in 2003. Their combined passion for movement through yoga, dance and gymnastics birthed this baby, and it has spread like wildfire across the globe.

FOR THE NAYSAYERS

There are some who say that AcroYoga is not “true” yoga. But what does that even mean; “True yoga”? Let’s come back to the basics. Yoga: Breathing consciousness into everything we do. Connecting body to mind, mind to spirit. From Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, “yogas chitta vritti nirodhah” [translation] “yoga is the removal of the fluctuations of the mind”. It seems to me that you can remove the fluctuations of the mind making a peanut butter and jam sandwich if you bring your consciousness to it. Why not also on the conscious practice of playfully connecting with other human beings, moving our bodies through space, building trust, communication skills, creating community, increasing strength and balance? Sounds like “true” yoga to me.

SO, DEAR READERS...

Come check us out! Classes are every Monday and Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:30pm at the Front YogaLoft, and in case you need more convincing, every class ends with an optional Thai Yoga massage. You and a partner can practice giving and receiving (we love practicing receiving) this deliciously relaxing form of massage therapy. View all of our yoga classes here.

We hope to see you there!

I want to live in a world where strangers from different cultures can become friends through the joy of playfulness. Seeing people shift their beliefs about themselves, each other and the world is what motivates me. I am forever amazed at how a first AcroYoga flight can dissolve barriers of language and country, or how one improvement on a handstand can invigorate new possibilities of strength, balance and progress.
