Falling, it’s a big part of climbing. We do it all the time, but if we are being honest many of us aren’t completely comfortable with falling, and in many cases the possibility of falling prevents us from trying our hardest and enjoying a climb to its fullest. This clinic provides ways of objectively assessing risk and dealing with fear. The clinic also gives ample opportunities to take and catch falls, but don’t worry, we won’t force you to take huge whippers. The goal is to identify each climber’s comfort zone, whatever it may be, and then help climbers expand it. The clinic is fun and supportive, so bring a friend and start the process of becoming more confident climbers together.

*This class focuses on falling while rope climbing. It is geared towards lead climbers. Participants must be at least top-rope belay certified, but are preferably lead certified.

Outdoor Ascent Series

*The 2019 Spring Outdoor Ascent Series has ended. Enjoy your Summer, and stay tuned for Fall info!*

Acquire new skills inside with The Front and then refine them outside with a local guide service

The Front partners with a local guiding service each year to bring you a climbing class program called the Outdoor Ascent Series. The series covers outdoor sport climbing fundamentals such as cleaning anchors, lowering, and rappelling as well as outdoor top-roping and an introduction to trad climbing. We’ll begin each course by going over the basics, practicing, and getting comfortable in the gym and then the local guiding company (TBD) will take you outside to apply those skills. Join other Front members and supportive, experienced instructors to help build a knowledgeable outdoor climbing community and get the local climbing beta.

Each course is $150 for Front members and $175 for non-members. The courses broken up into 3 days and includes 4 hours of indoor instruction at our gym and 4 hours of outdoor instruction. (The only exception is Intro to Trad Climbing, which is 2 days and has 2 hours of indoor instruction and 6 hours outside.)

Meet the Instructors

Adam Tobey

From climbing trees and building structures as a kid to the pursuit of more technical sport and alpine projects today, I have always enjoyed getting outside and up off the ground. I climb to spend time with friends, enjoy nature, and to give my mind a break from the craziness of the world. I love climbing outdoors and in, and am stoked to help others acquire the knowledge to do the same.

My teaching experience is rather varied. I’ve taught of children, youth, and graduate students in a classroom setting. I’ve taught technical mountain skills to high schoolers and young adults as a mountaineering guide in British Columbia. And now, at The Front, I am excited to teach movement and technical skills to help people fall in love with the sport and adventure of rock climbing and succeed in meeting their goals therein.
