Mark Twain was known to say, “In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.”

He must have been in Utah at the time. Jeez-la-weez! 50º one day and frozen the next. Snow and sleet for breakfast and balmy sunshine for lunch. Utah is weird. But that’s why we love herfor all of her weird, wild and wonderful.

One thing to be sure of, and what the weather can’t change, is that everyday we are getting more blessed sunlight. Hallelujah! These longer days of light can’t help but stir something in our bones. You can feel it, can’t you? This primordial call to crawl out from the cave of winter and spread out, stretch out and bounce around a little?

The animals feel it, too. Birds start singing. Migrations back north begin. Hibernation comes to an end. Knobby-wobbly legged babies are born, and the earth smells sweeter as it’s pregnant with life about to bloom.

And all because of light.

Light. Is. Life.

Spring Equinox has just come and gone. Fact: The word “equinox” is a Latin derivative and means “equal night”. March 20th was our day this year when the earth had just about as much sunlight as moonlightplus or minus a few moments. According to ancient calendars it’s the first day of Spring and the time to get movin’ and shakin’ because there’s work to be done! The seeds have to be planted and crops have to grow because Mama’s gotta eat! And everyone elsethey gotta eat too. 🙂

Things are a little different today (if you haven’t noticed). Agriculture doesn’t fall into our individual laps, but it’s still a time when we feel inspired to get to work. We may find ourselves spontaneously cleaning out closets that have been abandoned for centuries or we may really… this time… get going on those New Year’s Resolutions.

But first, let’s take a step out our front door, turn our faces up to the sky, close our eyes, take a deep breath and soak in the sunshine!

Even though some days it doesn’t look like it, don’t let wily Utah fool you. Spring is here, friends! We did it!
