Who doesn’t love a six-pack?! Don’t get me wrong, that liquid stuff is great, but I’m talking about abs! And unfortunately, they don’t come easily. It takes work to build a strong core, but it’s worth it, and not just for the good looks.

Core muscles stabilize our spine and provide a firm support for all the activities we do. They transfer force through your body and prevent us from having undesired back, hip, knee and even neck pain! Below are three specific reasons why you should strengthen your core, and a few workout ideas to help!

1. Stability

Core stability refers to the ability to keep your spine from moving during physical activities. Your core helps you control your body effectively, helping you use your arms and legs to the best advantage, and prevents your spine from bending or flexing unintentionally.

The major muscles involved in core stability include the pelvic floor muscles, transversus abdominis, multifidus, internal and external obliques, rectus abdominis, erector spinae (sacrospinalis) especially the longissimus thoracis and the diaphragm.

2. Balance

Your core stabilizes your body, allowing you to move in any direction as well as having proper balance. It helps prevents falls and supports your body. Having a strong core is beneficial to everyone because it allows your body to function properly.

3. A Strong Core Can Help Reduce Injury

Strong core muscles make it easier to do most physical activities. Strong core muscles are also important for athletes, such as mountain climbers, as weak core muscles can lead to more fatigue, less endurance and injuries. Weak core muscles can also leave you susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries.

Strengthening Your Core

Building a strong core plays an essential role in improving overall performance. While there are many different exercises that are beneficial for constructing the major core muscles, my go-to core tool is the TRX strap.

TRX is highly effective in strengthening all major core muscles through movement and body resistance training. Every exercise with TRX greatly benefits core stability, balance and strength.

I’ve very selectively choreographed my TRX Strength, TRX Fusion, Core Fusion3 and TABATA classes, which are offered at The Front Ogden, to build muscular strength, endurance and more importantly, your CORE!

Please note: Although we’re currently closed due to COVID-19, some of our Front SLC fitness instructors are teaching online classes (including Cardio & Core) and they’re open to everyone! Check out the online schedule here.
